An account at Banco de la Fe

SUMMARY: We should give to the poor out of compassion and not for personal gain or recognition. We should not expect repayment or gratitude, but rather see it as a loan to the Lord. The promise of payment from the Lord is worth more than gold and silver. If we have been stingy towards the poor, we should ask for forgiveness.

We are to give to the poor moved by mercy. Not to be seen or applauded, much less to gain influence over them; Rather, we are to provide help out of sheer sympathy and compassion.

We should not expect to receive everything back from the poor, and not even gratitude; rather, we are to consider what we have done as a loan to the Lord. He assumes the obligation, and, if we see Him in this matter, we should not look at the other party involved. What honor the Lord grants us when he condescends to borrow from us! The merchant who has the Lord on record in his accounting books is greatly favored. It would be a shame to have such a name registered for a meager portion; Let's turn it into a large sum. Let's help the next person in need we meet along the way.

As for the repayment of the loan, we could hardly think about it, and yet here we have the note signed by the hand of the Lord. Blessed be His name, for His promise of payment is better than gold and silver. Are we falling short because of the depression of the times? We can venture to humbly present this promissory note at the Banco de la Fe. Have any of our readers acted as a stingy towards the poor? Poor soul. May the Lord forgive him.
