Summary: A man hesitates to pick up a cigarette on the ground because he knows someone is watching him. This raises the question of how we act when we think no one is watching us. God's eyes are always on us and we need to be aware of this. The real problem is not the cigarette, but the temptation it represents. Someone is always watching us and we need to be mindful of our actions.
Scorching sunny day, the street is so broken that I try to take a sidewalk that cuts a little further ahead, but this little stretch is a relief to my feet. A relatively young man comes walking towards me, we are still a few meters apart, I see that he stops, looks at the floor to his left, hesitates for a moment, but decides to continue walking, passes by my side and I continue, curiosity invades me, what was it that made you stop and look meditative?
I pass by the place where he stood and look, then I understand his indecision, there is a cigarette on the ground, it looks good, no one has touched it, it is fit to be smoked, the temptation must have been terrible, but why what did not take it? Because he knew I was looking at him! Everything would have been different if I had not come in front of him.
And us, what do we have to do with this? Ah, brothers! It is incredible the metamorphosis that occurs in us on some occasions when "They are not looking at us"
This reminds me of the fairy tales we used to listen to as children. Do you remember? Princesses who at certain times were beautiful and at others were witches, or frogs, in short. How much in common do we have with these characters? To what extent do we act for those who are watching us? Is our way of conducting ourselves, dressing, communicating always the same? What happens when we think that nobody is looking at us?
I remember one day I left a church and could see a few blocks away a brother, husband as well as a church leader, quietly smoking in everyone's eyes. The question to ask ourselves then is: Is no one really looking at us? Don't you feel his gaze on you? Or is it that you just think he's looking at you sometimes and entertaining himself at other times? Doesn't God tell us in Job 34.21? "Because his eyes are on the ways of man and he sees all his steps." This includes our good and bad steps.
How long are we going to tempt our God? How long will we make fun of Him? How many of us have ever heard the phrase? "If this is a Christian, I don't want to be" What are we doing with God! What a picture we are showing of Him! We are making our God an object of ridicule. Yes, God's eyes are always on us. The Holy Spirit who always accompanies us is saddened. The tears shed in the Garden of Gethsemane re-water the earth every time we stray from our path of holiness.
The cigarette was not the problem, the real problem is what it represents: sin, temptation. You decide if you pick it up or leave it. But you can be sure: Someone is watching you and those eyes are searching the depths of your soul!
