Summary: The speaker challenges listeners to live out Colossians 3:23, doing everything as for the Lord and not for men. He encourages believers to bring their faith into their workplaces and to be a light to their coworkers, showing them the difference that Christ makes in their lives. The speaker shares a personal story of facing a crisis and finding comfort in the knowledge that God is always in control.
When faced with the possibility of losing someone, the speaker experienced a moment where all their problems disappeared. They attribute this to God being in control. The speaker encourages others to live out their faith and ask themselves if their co-workers and clients see Jesus in them. They aim to hear from heaven that they were faithful in little and will enter into the joy of the Lord. The speaker suggests creating altars in their homes and workplaces by faith.
I want to raise awareness based on the Colossians chapter 3 verse 23 and I just want to challenge you to think of something different. Paul in this Epistle, in that verse says: "Everything you do, do it with your heart as for the Lord and not for men." How many believe it? how many believe it?
"Everything you do, do it with your heart as for the Lord and not for men." Tomorrow is Monday, a very difficult day at work after an exhausting weekend or after having enjoyed it a lot. Let's go to work tomorrow, right? We are going to work tomorrow?
And many of us are going to do tomorrow to complete what we stopped doing on Friday. We have a list of things to do, we have it on the iPad, iPod, we have it on a notepad, and when that alarm goes off tomorrow I'm going to get up. The woman prepares the children, no: we all prepare the children, we leave them at school or the babysitter or at the bus stop to go to school; We then get to our jobs either by public transportation or driving or walking or skateboarding, however we get to work. And many like me are fans of Donkey Donuts, how many say amen to that?
We order coffee, we are in line accelerating because we want to get to work, we want to go up to the office either in the corporate area or at school in a classroom or in a truck, or doing landscaping or in a non-profit we got to work. And one of the characteristics of the 21st century believer is that we seem to work for the central intelligence agency, the CIA. what do I want to say with that? that we arrive at work undercover, they don't know that we are believers.
Under the excuse that this is not a job where they allow people to talk, confidentiality, ethics, sensitivity, we do not want to offend, we want to assimilate the culture in which we are working, we do not want anyone to be offended and we are like undercover agents. And it may be that on that particular day we are in the kitchen of our work taking a break, having a coffee, doing something different and in the middle of that break, from that coffee break sometimes very theological questions arise, very deep and we independently of the work or area that we are doing during the week we have left our jobs to complete work hours, not to do evangelistic work.
We separate that nature, we leave it here today and we pick it up on Wednesday and if not next Sunday, not taking into account friend, friend that at that moment when you are at work a deep question arises: are you the man or woman of God who Have you been called to that particular job to answer that particular question? But you have to believe it. You have to believe it.
Questions that are not for Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, questions that have to do with life or death, family questions or the question of the bombs in the Boston Marathon. And many times we don't want to talk because we don't want to get into trouble. And many times we say that we want to have a coffee but not at work, we want to avoid, we want to avoid. We don't want to have to deal with that roughness or that thorn.
But this afternoon I want us to reflect and think: where God has me working, God has called me to work. How many believe it? If God called me to do a job in a hospital, my ministry as a man or woman of God is to work in that hospital. What does that mean? When I leave my house for work I leave with a service mentality because I am going to serve, I am not going to make money, that is what the world says. I want fame, I want money, I want position, I want an image, and that is what we are looking for, right?
Unfortunately, if you have the Lord, God has given you a position, God has given you an image, God has given you money. God is blessing you, God has made you light so that you are in the midst of darkness. For those people who possibly have more education or have a number of problems, you are there as the light that God has placed. You have the authority, you have the call, you have the anointing, you have what God has given you that is better than the world can offer, but at that moment the question arises: do we hide the light?
We hide because we are ashamed. We don't want the world to look down on us. We want to be with the world, we don't want them not to promote us if they know we are Christians, we don't want them to discriminate against us because we are believers.
But this morning I am not asking you to play a part in your work, nor to take out a tambourine in your office, I am asking you to show with your life that you are different, that you have been called. That even if you don't have many words, there are times when words are not needed, people are needed as I was saying today I was speaking with a sister who is in a hospital who says that when she is in the emergency room she is not a nurse or a doctor and she is a person Hispanic and they have told her in the ER that it will not last long, she takes advantage of that and says: do you want me to pray for you? to at least make sure that your soul is saved, that even if God does not heal you, God saves you.
Hallelujah. This afternoon I want us to emphasize: when I leave my house for my work, whatever it is I am going to do something that I have never done and that is that tomorrow morning when you arrive at work and sit in your work area , whatever work it is, you say: this area, this area is the tabernacle that I am going to raise, hallelujah. The building may belong to the devil but this area belongs to God and I am bringing God with me. Hallelujah, ayah but you have to believe it, you have to claim it.
God is putting us in important positions. Those in corporate areas: hallelujah. Where did God put Joseph? corporate area. Where did God put Daniel? corporate area.
I believe in a real Christ, you don't have to make a big scandal or put your hands on a job because they're going to call a psychologist, a psychiatrist, but our co-workers need to know why you're different, why your family is stable , why in the face of life's problems you don't deny what you are. Why, why, why, why?! because it does not depend on me, it does not depend on what I am, it does not depend on what I have studied, it does not depend on a diploma, it depends on the fact that many years ago a man, a carpenter, was nailed to the cross. He did not stay on the cross, he was buried. He did not stay in the grave, he rose on the third day. Hallelujah!.
Why do I have to hide what I am? Why if I have the light? I have the light because to put the altar in my work I have the altar in my house, I have the altar in my life, I have the altar with all my family. Imagine for a second: if my family has an altar, if I have an altar and I get together with my sister and brother and we go to work and we put up altars, hehehe, every little cubicle that we step on.
I had a boss who was a santero and nobody knew it. He was vice president of a hospital and he supposedly dominated people with that. I always felt every time we went to a meeting with all the managers and he spoke I said: there is something against but it can't be, it can't be what I perceive or what I think. And he is talking one day, how to master stress at work? And that's when he says: if you know how to overcome stress, we can meet after work to receive the saints and I understood, I was the only Hispanic in the group with him I said: ok he's talking about another saint, I know what he is talking about.
For him that was like a part time because putting on the different saints cost thousands of dollars, that was what made money and this is a vice president. And one day he arrives with many necklaces, he forgot to take off the necklaces, he had necklaces, notice that he could put a piece of jewelry on his own (laughs) and he was happy with the necklaces. And he tells me: Isaías, I was in Brooklyn the other days in a pharmacy and it seems to me, you were singing with a group from a church?
My mind was: if I say that I am not going to lie. If I say yes, he is my boss: what will happen? I said: well, I cannot deny or sell what I am. So I tell him: yes I am a Christian. Oh, ok, how are you doing with that? I'm doing well and he tells me: well you're doing so well that you're never going to reach my position because what I have I've paid for and forget it. And I told him: blessed, how much have you spent on what you have? A lot of money. I told him: well, this one who is here had to do like this: yes, Lord, I accept you and He paid for everything.
A few years go by, I'm working at another hospital, I'm working the midnight shift. They bring someone in an emergency ambulance with a drug overdose. Who was it? the vice president. Passed away, passed away What you and I have to make the changes in our work areas, in our communities cost absolutely nothing and that is a power that no one can contain or stop. When we are at work you only think: you are a son or a daughter of God.
Peter says: "You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired by God." How many powers or domains, principalities have risen in recent years to prevent this Church from building that temple? Quite a few but forgot that this group of believers united under the vision of one man, a ministerial body, a united people raising altars day and night, day and night have not been able to contain what is coming. They will not be able to contain it, they will not be able to stop it because it does not depend on you or me, it depends on the crucified Christ who rose on the third day.
Begin to throw coal or fire from the corner on that altar, let the Holy Spirit who is here today; take it home and take it to work and there at work testify with your life. Arrive early, do your job, be respectful, don't have problems talking about the boss or the boss because you're gossiping, they won't respect you later. Your work speaks, your work speaks.
In the morning he said that I asked my wife during the week, my wife is a nurse and I told her: look Vivian when you, if you left the apartment we live in and went to T.J. Naxx and you were going to buy but you are not going to leave in your vehicle, you are going to walk and you are walking with what you need, right? Credicards or cash and someone comes on a skateboard, does a maneuver, falls and hits a car, what do you do?
She says: well, it activates that I am a nurse and I run to see how she is, if she is breathing, if she has vital signs, if she is alert because Isaías I am a nurse; that is something automatic, I do not shy away from that situation or hide or wait for 911 to be called.
Apply that to our lives. Our jobs, those spiritual emergencies arise: what do you do? what you do? You have the power, you have the authority. For example, how many families communicate, speak? How many families know where their children are after six in the evening? How many of your colleagues, co-workers have children who are in prison? Coworkers.
You have the alternative, you have the alternative. Maybe we have the same problems but we are happy people, we are happy people because our happiness does not depend on something external. It's been about three years now, my faith was tested very, very great and look, I've been tested but never like that. Always working in hospitals that room that they have prepared for when they are going to tell you that you are going to lose a family member that room is there and my middle son was the victim of a car accident three years ago now and they gave him 72 hours and as a family that It was something.
When you think you're going to lose someone like that, I went through a space where all my problems disappeared. That was like magic, all my problems were gone. I don't know if it was something psychological or my brain made me shutdown and delete but everything was forgotten, that problem was the biggest. Do you know what I did in the middle of that problem? a crisis right? It was thanking the Lord that He is always in control.
During the months that he was in the hospital, which were about eight or nine months, different hospitals, I was with him and Vivian and the boys all the time, right? and it was nice to hear the other patients and professionals in the hospital say: you are a different family, right? because they come every day and a lot of religious people come here and the support and forget it, I didn't have to ask for anything. I did not have to give a treaty.
Live, live, live, live. There is a theologian who said in the 16th century: look, don't preach the Gospel, live it. Live it. Tell the person next to you: don't tell me you love me, show me that you love me.
Tomorrow at five in the afternoon or at the time you leave work, whatever time it is, ask yourself a question: when you pick up your wallet or your work equipment or are parking your tractor trailer that you are going to leave, ask yourself this: have they seen my clients or co-workers to Jesus in my life? Because we always ask ourselves: well, what would Jesus do? what would Jesus do in my place? but now the question is different. Do the people I work with for eight or ten hours see Jesus in me or do they see something else?
Because at the end of the day, at the end of the whole day, I want to hear from heaven when they tell me: well, good servant, faithful in little, you were faithful in much, I will give you, enter into the joy of your Lord. God bless you, God keep you. What are we going to do tomorrow, what are we going to do tomorrow? Today we are going to make altars in our houses by faith. Start with your life: altar at home, altar at work and we conquered Boston. God bless you.
