Summary: Lot's wife became a pillar of salt because she disobeyed God's command to not look back while fleeing from destruction. This represents believers, the church, who are saved by God's grace but become stagnant and unresponsive to the Holy Spirit's direction. This happens when we cling to material possessions, stay connected to the past, walk behind God, and do things behind His back. We must remember Lot's wife as a warning to live in the present and look forward to the future with excitement. A determined believer learns from the past, lives in the present, and looks forward to the future.

Being connected to the past does not allow us to enjoy the present, much less puts us in a good position to launch into the future. It is unfortunate to say that many times we live with a present calendar, but the date on our emotional calendar indicates earlier dates which is called "past." On one occasion, our Lord Jesus Christ gave a warning which is recorded in Luke 17:32 and it was that we remember Lot's wife. Why is this woman not to be forgotten, but to be remembered? What should we remember about this woman? The answer is simple: We must remember and not forget that this woman became a pillar of salt.

Let me put before you some significant principles:

  • Becoming a pillar of salt implies that he became a motionless woman; his body froze.

  • Becoming a statue of salt implies that she became a woman without feelings, without affection, or emotions, without heart and without mind, without soul.

  • Becoming a pillar of salt implies that she became a spiritless woman to praise God, who in his mercy had rescued her and her family.

By becoming a pillar of salt: His body, soul and spirit stopped responding.

Lot's wife represents the believer, the church, who is freed from eternal punishment, and is saved by the mighty hand of God, but who becomes a STATUE OF SALT and does not respond in obedience to the directives of the Spirit of God.

Why this woman, why the believer, why does the church fall into this condition?

  • We fall into this condition when we cling to the things of this world - When we cling to the material, to the temporary, to the fleeting, to what is consumed with time and use. Everything she owned was now being destroyed (she lost it) and this caused so much pain that she preferred to disobey what God had told her: "Do not look behind you, nor stop in all this plain" (Gen. 19:17). She couldn't see any further. He couldn't see that the same hand that was saving them was the same hand that he was going to provide later. Sometimes we get so attached to material things that we can't see God's favor before us.

  • We fall into this condition when we stay connected to the past - Thinking about what I did or did not do, thinking about what they did to us, thinking about who abandoned us. Staying connected to the past, to what is left behind, leads us to an immobile condition, of not being able to move forward, of not being able to achieve our dreams, desires, desires. We remain static and without progress.

  • He falls into this condition because he is walking behind and not at the same time - God commands us to walk at the same time as Him. Also at the same time as the partner He has given us. Being next to each other also implies being in agreement, in harmony. It is being on the same page with our partner and with God.

  • We fall into this condition when we do things behind God's back - "He looked behind his back" (v.26). Husbands fall into this immobile condition doing things behind their wives' backs; wives doing things behind their husbands' backs; children doing things behind their parents' backs; believers doing things behind the back of their spiritual leaders and behind the back of God. Many of these things are not seen, that is, they do not come to fruition, but are motivations and hidden agendas that are within the heart. This makes us cold people, without feelings or emotions, without affection, without life; turns us into statues of salt. In people without sweetness in life, because our conscience constantly accuses us.

"Remember Lot's wife" - This warning must be recorded as an echo in our minds so that we do not fall into this condition. As children of God we cannot be living in the past of our history. What happened has already happened and we have to enjoy the present and have good spirits for the future, because the best is yet to come.

A determined believer is one who learns from the past, lives in the present, and remains excited about the future.
