Summary: Intercession is the act of praying for the needs of others, and it is a lifestyle that every believer can participate in. It is not just a gift or ministry for a select few. Intercession is associated with characteristics such as passion, persistence, and standing in the gap for others. It is important to pray with God's mind and heart, which is full of love and mercy. Jesus Christ is our model for intercession.
To understand what intercession is, let's take a car for example. The power of God is the engine. God's love is the fuel (gasoline) that runs the engine. Intercession is the ignition key; that seemingly insignificant object, on which the result depends. Who has that key? We, the church of Jesus Christ. That was what God established.
What does prayer have to do with anointing?
Anointing is the power of the Holy Spirit operating in the life of the believer. We can pray under an anointing that rots the yoke or we can pray that nothing happens - in an ineffective way. Praying under the anointing that rots the yoke is praying God's way. When we pray God's way we can be sure that there will always be results, even if we don't see them.
What is praying God's way?
The intercessor who prays in God's way is loyal and faithful to God and His word.
Let me give you the example of Judges Ch. 7 - Gideon and his Army. God began to see fear in the hearts of many men and said to Gideon "To all who are trembling with fear (22 thousand) send them to their homes" - Then, God says: "the 10,000 that are left, you are going to take them to the river. Those who kneel to drink water, you send them home. But those who lick the water, like dogs, taking it from their hands to their mouths, (there were 300) with those I'm going to give you the victory ”. The main characteristic of dogs is loyalty and fidelity.
Water is a symbol of the Word of God. He who is faithful to God and his Word, is working in God's way. He is also alert and vigilant to what is happening around him. He does not throw himself into the water to satisfy his own need, regardless of what may happen around him, but is attentive, taking the floor, but looking around to notice any need or any attack that arises. That person when he prays, will have results and will untie the anointing that rots the yoke - because he is praying, according to God's will, in God's way and not for his own benefit.
In God's word, we are constantly commanded to pray. All intercession is prayer, but not all prayer is intercession. What is specific about intercessory prayer is that, unlike petition prayer, which leads us to present our own needs to God, this prayer focuses on the needs of others. As we study the Bible, we can see men and women who interceded for cities and nations; and because they interceded, the story was changed.
What is intercessory prayer?
Intercession is associated with characteristics such as: passion and persistence. It is joining the risen Christ who lives in a perennial state of intercession. Etymologically it is to interpose (as between opposites), to stand in the middle; offer yourself to someone who needs help; committing oneself to the needs of others in a similar way to the Samaritan (Lk. 10: 33-34); pay the price in an intervention, as Christ paid the price for sinners.
True intercession is not something we wrap ourselves in once a week, it is a lifestyle. We err in believing that the call to intercede is for a few. We say “That is not my ministry; intercession is the ministry of each one. We have been led to believe that intercession is a "gift" given to a few; when the Bible doesn't even mention that it's a gift. Every believer has the privilege of being used by God in effective intercession. This is not for the favored few and it is not for the elderly, who have nothing to do; It is not for some calls to the "Ministry of Intercession." Intercession is for everyone!
Who is an advocate?
There is no true intercession if there is no Love - God's love in us is the basis of intercession. As love flows, the prayer life must flow. The life of prayer cannot be programmed. Of course, specific times of uninterrupted prayer have to be scheduled, but disciplined times of prayer emerge in and as part of a life surrendered to God.
