Summary: David, a warrior King, wrote Psalm 86 during a season when he was being chased and hunted by enemies. In this heartfelt prayer, David cries out to God for mercy and acknowledges that God is a God of compassion and mercy. David became a man after God’s own heart because he took the time to know and value God’s heart. We should pursue God for who He is and allow Him to imprint upon us whatever demarcations He chooses to imprint upon the scroll of our soul. At the end of the day, we are His message to the entire world. Let us make time and take time to know God like David did.

For a man like David, a warrior King, we observe how that during different seasons of his life, he had been chased and hunted as he ran and hid from vengeful enemies. Many people today feel as though they are experiencing these same kinds of feelings. In some cases, these enemies may be actual, but for many, the enemies are in our minds or in fairly safe social settings. In our scripture text for today, David was likely in one of those seasons when King Saul, Absalom, his son, or the whole Philistine army was out to kill him.

David writes in ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭86 and verses 14-16‬.... “O God, insolent people rise up against me; a violent gang is trying to kill me. You mean nothing to them. But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Look down and have mercy on me. Give Your strength to your servant; save me” (New Living Translation).‬‬‬‬‬‬

In this heartfelt prayer, we hear the cry of David, the man about whom God said, “He was a man after My own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14). The reason that David became ultimately a man after God’s own heart, was precisely because he took the time to be with God and understand and value His heart.

Please saints, in all of our praying, in all of our pursuing, in all of our searching after God, please be careful not to be pursuing God to get His favor. Whether you realize it or not, you already have His favor. Don’t pursue Him for function, utility, or even to be used by Him. If you pursue God, it almost goes without saying that you will be empowered by Him for service, but let your motivation be to pursue Him for who He is.

Know Him. Allow Him to imprint upon you whatever demarcations He chooses to imprint upon the scroll of your soul. We think that we want to be His messenger; we want to carry His word; we want to be His ambassador and emissary. You already are! At the end of the day, you are His message to the entire world. Again, Paul, the amazing Apostle that he was, expressed it best in 2 Corinthians Chapter 3 and verses 2 and 3.... “You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart” (New King James Version).

David chose to make time and to take time to know God. Let us do the same.
