Summary: The name Judas has become unpopular due to its association with Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Judas's greatest betrayal was the one he did to his own soul. He lived with the Son of God for three years but did not understand anything. He later hanged himself and denied salvation. However, many people today follow in his path, thinking there is no hope for them. But God always forgives those who seek Him with a repentant heart.
Would anyone dare to name a son of his Judas? In recent times in our country many like to invent new names for their sons and daughters and make combinations looking for originality. Parents do not want to give their descendants common names. Nobody calls a daughter María or Marta or José or Humberto a boy. Everyone wants original names.
So it has become fashionable to put the father's or mother's name backwards, or to make combinations of both, or to adapt a foreign name. The result is that there are many children out there that probably when they are adults will run to change their names. That is why I think the name of Judas can be striking. Nobody else has it in the world. It's short and means "praise of God." But who would dare to use it?
It intrigues me that not only Christians reject it. Such a name disappeared from the world since Judas Iscariot used it. What a sad story about this man! Judas was part of the select and very small group of the twelve apostles. During the three years that Jesus was preaching and teaching in Palestine, Judas was with him. He listened to all their stories, saw miracles, enjoyed the unique character and life of the Son of God. However, he ended up giving her for thirty pieces of silver. His name thus became synonymous with the most execrable betrayal and that is the reason why no one uses it anymore.
I have always thought that Judas's greatest betrayal was the one he did to his own soul. Ultimately, Jesus was going to die on the cross, whether Judas or whoever it was. But living with the son of God in his brief passage through the world and getting lost is a total and very tragic contradiction! Judas understood nothing of what he heard or saw during the three years that he lived with the Son of God. It is evident that he very much repudiated his mistake in betraying him and decided to hang himself when what he had to do was repent and ask for forgiveness. If he had, his story would be different. But Judas, sadly, did not understand anything and thus denied his life the possibility of salvation.
No one bears the name of Judas today, but many follow his path. They hear the gospel, they live close to others who have had a conversion experience, they even get excited at some time by some preaching or a Christian testimony! But they think there is no hope for them. I hope this is not the case for anyone reading these lines. No matter what you've done, God wants to forgive you. No matter how low we have fallen, there is always hope of forgiveness and restoration for those who seek God with a repentant heart.
He never despises the contrite and humbled heart.
God bless you!
