Summary: The victory of the believer is the ability to overcome the powers of darkness and not fall into temptation. Our victory is a result of faith and has merit only in the cross of Christ. We are not victors because we are in Christ, but because our union with him is the only guarantee of our victories. As Christians, we participate in the victories of Christ and understand that when we appropriate faith to walk alongside him, we are enabled to live a victorious life over sin, temptations, and against the fiery darts of the enemy of the cross.

One of the most amazing statements of God in his Word is found in the epistles of John when he affirms that "he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God overcomes the world" (1 John 5.5). I believe it and I invite you to believe it too. We have been begotten by God in the Spirit; we are the new creation in Christ, partakers of his divine nature (2 Peter 1.4) and we have inherited a spiritual DNA derived from his redeeming blood. We cannot boast of anything but Christ. Do we spiritually understand the supernatural dimension of our salvation? Do we honor the sacrifice of Jesus? God speaks through John and strikes us with another extraordinary statement: “Because everything that is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith. " (1 John 5.5)

That's how it is. Our victory is the result of faith. In theological terms, the word victory is a word that is always conditioned in the Word of God. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for victory literally means "salvation." The psalmist joyfully praised the Lord: “We will sing with joy for your victory (salvation), and in the name of our God we will raise a flag. (Ps 20.5a). This was the kind of victory that God brought to Israel against hostile and enemy forces that brought peace to the people. However, in the New Testament, the victory of the believer refers to the ability of those born in the Spirit, begotten in God by the blood of Christ, to overcome the powers of darkness and the machinations of the evil one and not fall into temptation. So our victory has only merit in the cross of Christ and is translated into spiritual blessings by the grace of God.

Jesus speaks to us from his throne of grace: "To the victor I will grant to sit with me on my throne, just as I also conquered and sat with my Father on his throne" (Ap. 3.21). And who is the winner? He who abides in saving faith in the Son of God; even if he stumbles, even if at times he loses his strength, although at times sin takes him away from the blessings of God, but in the end he finds the courage to repent and be restored.

There are those who attribute their victories to their own efforts, to their fragile and vulnerable humanity. The world has set standards to establish whether a man is successful or not: the car he drives, the luxury and dimensions of the home he inhabits, the school his children attend, the salary he receives, but when it comes to God it is impossible to walk on such "victories and successes" as they are like soap bubbles. Nothing belongs to us; Everything belongs to God and we are simple administrators of earthly goods, he is sovereign over everything and to those who seek him by denying himself, he grants true victories in the Christian life.

As Christians we are participants in the victories of Christ and we understand that when we appropriate faith to walk alongside him, we are enabled to live a victorious life over sin, temptations and against the fiery darts of the enemy of the cross. The victory of the Christian is manifested in the presence of God in his life; it becomes visible when the sweet anointing of his Word is incarnated in his heart to live according to it.

Faith in Jesus is our greatest strength to obtain the victory that conquers the world daily; the system of precepts, doctrines and philosophies contrary to the Word of God. Promises of ephemeral success and conditional happiness. We are one with the Son of God and believing this with the faith of the Spirit, we participate in the victory of Christ over the world. This is how we must understand victory. We are not victors because we are in Christ, but because our union with him, with him alone, is the only guarantee of our victories.

God bless your Word!
