Summary: The Shunammite woman sought intimacy with God through her relationship with the prophet Elisha. She was a woman of initiative, respect, and spiritual discernment. She approached her husband to build a room for the prophet to stay in when he visited, showing her desire for deeper intimacy with God and her willingness to bless His servant. This story emphasizes the importance of seeking greater levels of closeness with God, caring for the well-being of God's servants, being detailed and disciplined in our service, and investing materially and financially for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.
The Shunammite sought intimacy with God through her relationship with the prophet Elisha. She is a woman of meaning in her community, she is a woman of respectable character, she is a woman who loves the things of God, who is seeking more intimacy with the Lord, who has spiritual discernment.
We see in Second Kings chapter 4 in verses 9 and 10, how this woman approaches her husband and takes the initiative and tells her husband, because she is a wife subject to her husband, but she is a woman of great initiative also.
One of the interesting things about this woman is that on the one hand, she always consults her husband when he is going to do something of importance, but she is also a woman of great dynamism and diligent in material things and in spiritual things, which It indicates something to us: that Scripture has nothing against the woman being an individual of initiative, of authority, of spiritual creativity, but it also points out this importance of accepting and allowing herself to be directed, and allowing herself to be led by her husband who according to the pattern Biblical is like the person who calls the shots, the head of the home.
So she approaches her husband as if to consult with him, but notice that it is she who has discerned what is happening spiritually because her husband is also portrayed here as a man a bit passive with the things of the Lord. He is at all times like just a secondary character, she is the one with the singing voice. Unfortunately this sometimes reflects a reality and it is that many times it is women who exercise leadership in spiritual things and it is men who are a little behind and behind in this dimension.
How important it is that the man celebrates his leadership as head of the home, but also that his leadership is something effective, something real, that the man directs not by decree but by example. In this case we see that this man was the head of the home and his wife recognizes him, but he is not the person who takes the key spiritual initiatives for the benefit of the home.
Anyway, she approaches her husband and after telling him that she has discerned that he is a holy man of God, in verse 10 she says: "I beg you to make a small room with walls and put a bed there, table, chair and candlestick so that when he comes to us he will stay in it. "
So this woman wants to go a step further, maybe months or years have passed, who knows, and the prophet when he passes by her house comes, stays at her house to eat and I imagine they have a conversation time But now she wants to take things to an even deeper level.
In this case we see the importance that in the Christian life, in the spiritual life, we must be looking for greater levels of closeness and depth with God. The fact that she wanted him to not only stop by her house but to stay to eat was a great spiritual leap, but now she wants him to be able to stay at her house from time to time, stay there and perhaps be able to be closer with God through this contact with the prophet.
But we also see that she is interested in blessing the servant of God and is willing to physically invest in a room, a bedroom, perhaps a small house next to the house where that place would be reserved for the prophet so that when he passed by there in his travels he could stay and be comfortable.
So this woman not only has a personal interest in her own spiritual growth and the blessing that may be in her home, but it is evident that what interests her most is to bless the servant of God by providing him with a place where he can stay and stay. on his ministerial trips.
The importance right? that we care about the things of God. The Bible says very clearly: "Seek first the Kingdom of God and his justice, and the rest will come in addition."
When a person cares that the Church he attends has what it needs for his well-being, when he serves the Lord by volunteering, when he cares for the well-being of God's servants, when he faithfully tithes, when he does everything possible to contribute to the enrichment of his Church and the ministry of the Church of Christ in general that person will be blessed.
We also see that this woman is a very punctilious woman, very detailed because she already has in her mind what she wants to do: she wants to make a room and she already knows that she has to put a bed, a table, a chair and a candlestick, she has visualized the needs of God's servant.
How important it is that when we are going to serve the Lord we are detailed, we are thorough, we are disciplined, sometimes a little distracted and casual because we think: well, if I am going to serve the Lord that is enough. This woman is seen to be a very detailed woman, she has planned, has conceived a plan, goes to her husband, tells him what to do, I imagine that she will have asked him for some type of financial resources to carry out his plan But everything is ready and this woman wants this prophet of God to stay in her house, have more intimacy and that she can then bless him in a deeper way.
We see that idea here, right? that the Christian life is a life of increasing intimacy with God, that we cannot just stay on the surface or on the shore but that we have to go deeper into our relationship with God and our service to the Lord, and we have to invest as well materially and financially for the Kingdom of God to be advanced. God bless you and in our next message we will continue with this meditation.
