Summary: Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus, showing his understanding of human pain. We should not be told to smile when we lose a loved one because God wanted it that way. When we convert to Jesus, we are brought from death to life, and we no longer fear death because we are not alone. Jesus wants to give us life now and for eternity, so we should repent of our sins and accept his offer of forgiveness and life.
If we go to the tomb of Lazarus, we see a suffering Jesus and we find the shortest verse in the Bible: Jesus wept. (John 11:35) But how interesting that a little earlier, when Mary complains about her delay in arriving, we can read: "Jesus then, seeing her crying, and the Jews who accompanied her, also crying, were shaken in spirit and moved" John 11.33
It was the custom of the time to lament loudly and uncontrollably, but it was not the case with Jesus. He sheds tears of pain over the death of Lazarus because He could understand human pain (Isaiah 53: 3); A God-fearing and God-blessed family was in mourning. Grace sustains us, but it does not prevent mourning in the heart, especially if on good days we prostrate ourselves at the feet of Christ, we can come to his presence on a day of pain and find comfort.
We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, the Son of God shed tears! Let no one tell you that you should smile when you lose your loved one because God wanted it that way!
But the good news is that we will be resurrected and it is not for the future, it is for the present. When we convert to Him we are brought from death to life, we are resurrected, the decision is ours and then we stop living in fear of death because we are not alone. Jesus goes with us when we pass into that unknown dimension.
Those of us who trust Jesus fully will be with him eternally. Those who trust themselves do not have that assurance, but we should not affirm something that we do not know with certainty.
Even today Jesus cries out: "Take away the stone!" The stone of your fear, your fear, your doubt, your sin… and even more “… come outside!”. "I have come so that they may have life, and so that they may have it in abundance."
Jesus can bring you out of that dark and narrow grave and give you another chance at a new life. Christ today has the same power over death and this is an inexplicable miracle. He wants to give you life now and for eternity. Repent of your sin and accept his offer of forgiveness and life. If you want to do it now, make up your mind and come out!
