Summary: The lack of unity among Christians is a reason why the world resists believing in Christ. We need to focus on Christ and His redemptive work, leaving behind differences and simplicities. Christ prayed for our unity, and it is a testimony of credibility for the world. We are the majority when we walk with Christ, and nothing can prevail against us.
A praise that René González sings says in one of his verses: My Lord and I are the majority. A beautiful message for the church of Jesus Christ. Do you know one of the reasons why the world resists believing in Christ as Lord and Savior? Due to the lack of unity among Christians as a consequence of a poor relationship with the Lord. Sometimes we seem more "sheep without a shepherd" than the world itself. We appear not to have a Christocentric theological definition; each one pulling for their doctrinal truth, or for their group, or for their leaders. People say, what use are Christ and the church if they don't even understand each other? The unity of believers bears witness that Christ is real in the life of his church. We are the majority when we walk with Christ.
Years ago I was invited to the Keswick Convention, an interdenominational event held every year in the Cayman Islands. The central theme of the Convention was “All one in Christ Jesus”. The daily program of the event was led each day by a different denomination, as well as the worship and exposition of the Word. I was not impacted by the technology, not even the worship, fluid and offered in different styles, but the harmony and love prevailing between pastors of various strata, leaders and the body of Christ in general. The prayer time that preceded the daily program, with a multitude of pastors from various denominations praying for unity (sole reason for prayer), was the most uplifting for me. I seemed to hear the apostle Paul say: I beg you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be entirely united in the same mind and in the same mind . (1 Co 1.10).
The Lord prayed to the Father for the unity of his people, taking the idea of the union between the Son and the Father, that we be one in Christ, one in God, one in the Spirit. I in them, and you in me, so that they are perfected in unity, so that the world knows that you sent me, and that you loved them just as you have loved me. (John 17:23). Christ is the fullness of deity. If we are one in Christ, we are one in the fullness of deity. Why be one in Christ Jesus? For the world to believe. The testimony of the unity of the body of Christ is a testimony of credibility. The world has to see that we are united to believe. The church has to be relevant, it has to influence society, it has to impact and the first thing that is visible in the church as a body is its unity, which is translated into love, justice and mercy.
Christ emphasizes that we are perfect in that unity. Only a true (perfect) unity can speak for itself that Christ is has renewed our minds and has transformed our lives, that we are Christians, not in name, not nominal Christian (in name), but that Christ has truly worked in we in such a way that we are united in Him; not when it suits us, not united to worship him together only. Nor is this an ecumenical call. God loves diversity, but his Word does not admit all the interpretations that man wants.
Perfect in unity is to leave differences and simplicities behind and focus on Christ, in his redemptive work for humanity, in his message of reconciliation for all men. It is to focus on the cross and the blood of Christ for salvation. Christ points out that this unity will bear witness to Him, to the love of the Father in us, to the measure of stature that we have reached by walking by his side. We are a majority with Christ. And loved by God with the same intensity that He loves His Son; the key is to abide in Him, to be one in Him.
He is the head of the whole body that is his church. We are the majority united in Christ. Against that majority there are no giants, no fortresses, no empires that can prevail.
God bless you!
