Summary: God stopped the sun in answer to Joshua's prayer to show His sovereignty and power. Our faith is the supernatural substance that mobilizes God to do the impossible. Many times, God stops us to remind us that His plans are perfect and we must trust in His control. Like how God stopped the sun to ensure victory for Israel, He can stop in our lives to give us enough light that leads to victory. Our victory comes from Christ, who is the light of the world, and we can ask Him to stop in us and give us His light.
What for man is fortuitous and casual, for God is plan. On one occasion God stopped the sun in answer to a prayer (Joshua 10:13) to show that nature works according to His will and is subject to His rule and sovereignty. Also to show that faith of his people is the supernatural substance that mobilizes him to do what seems impossible to achieve victory. “… Because everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that overcomes the world: our faith ”(1 John 5.4) As you dealt with Joshua, you can deal with your children today. And he can even intentionally "stop" us to display his glory and keep us from sliding into the abyss of our folly. “There are ways that seem straight to man, but that end up being ways of death” (Prov. 14.12 NIV)
Many times life is similar to those dreams in which, terrified by anguish in the face of a situation that we cannot control, we want to take a step and we cannot; in our mind there is only the desire to escape at all costs, but something incomprehensible stops us, paralyzes us. In the real world this happens whenever we leave God out of our lives and pretend to take self-sufficient control of our actions. It is then that God stops us to remind us that He is God and that His projects are much better than ours, that we must trust in His control because His plan, even with scenarios and some episodes that we will never understand, is perfect, like His will is perfect.
God stopped the sun over the people of Gibeon so that Israel would inflict a final defeat against their enemies (Joshua 10). Thus he lengthened the daylight by stopping the sun at its zenith for many hours until the victory of his people was consummated. Who is our light? Why do we fear if we claim to have faith? Has not the light conquered the darkness? Weren't we transferred from the darkness into his marvelous light? “I, the Light, have come into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me does not remain in darkness. (John 12:46.)
The victories of the Christian are not his victories but those of Christ. But thank God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! (1 Co 15.57). The only one who has claimed to be the light of the world is Jesus (John 8.12) and the only one who claimed to have overcome him is Jesus. Christ shines at the zenith (highest) of your life and there he stops according to your faith to give you enough light that will lead you to victory (we have only one enemy who was defeated on the cross). Ask him to stop there, bathing you in his light and promise him that you will remain under it, rejecting the darkness of the world that does not cease to haunt you.
And the day (the Christian life) will be longer and more prosperous for you. Joshua prayed to God that the sun would stand still in favor of victory. Your victory will be praying for Jesus to stop in you and bathe you in his light that brings blessing and eternal life.
God bless you!
