Summary: In 1 Samuel 10, Samuel tells Saul that when he meets a company of prophets, the Spirit of the Lord will come upon him with power and he will be changed into another man. This is similar to the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts, where the disciples receive the Holy Spirit with power at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit within us is a presence, but when it is activated with power, it becomes transformative and dynamic. The baptism of the Holy Spirit should be accompanied by signs and manifestations, such as praise, joy, strength, and victory. Prophesying means speaking under the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit, and can take many forms such as praise, preaching, and exhortation. When a person receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit, they should give expression to that visitation through adoration, praise, and affirmation of faith.

After his encounter with this company of prophets who are worshiping the Lord with a multiplicity of instruments, Samuel says the following to Saul: "Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you with power, and you will prophesy with them" that is with this company of prophets, "and you will be changed into another man."

It is interesting that in that passage, we see as a nucleus, an essence of what precisely the baptism of the Holy Spirit is as we see it described later in the Book of Acts. Samuel tells him that when Saul meets these men "the Spirit of the Lord will come upon him in power."

I believe that this clarification that it will come "with the power of the Holy Spirit" is important for us to understand. Many times the children of God will have the Presence of the Spirit within them, because I believe that every person who receives Christ as Lord and Savior, the Spirit of God enters them, because it is the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of God and the Word is clear on this, but it is one thing to have that Spirit of God within us and another thing is for that Spirit of God to manifest with power, activate and become a dynamic, explosive force.

Notice that when Samuel anoints Saul with oil, in a sense that was already an anointing, the Spirit of God was already resting on Saul. The difference is that now the prophet Samuel says that there will be a time when he meets these men when the Spirit of God will descend in power. In other words, the Holy Spirit that was within Saul was no longer going to be a mere presence but was going to be activated. The Spirit of the Lord was going to fall on him in an explosive, dynamic, manifest way and already then he was going to become something visible that people could see and that would then become a work, or rather an energy that would allow great works in the Name of the Lord.

And we see that it is the same thing that happens in the New Testament in the Book of Acts. We see in the Book of Acts that at one point the disciples had received the Holy Spirit, but the Lord said to them: Hold on until the Holy Spirit has come upon you, meaning: with power, through that manifestation of Pentecost that it was accompanied by a strong wind and tongues, and by sounds that drew the attention of the entire city.

When the Holy Spirit comes into the lives of believers with power it is something transformative, it is something dynamic and we have to seek that experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit with power. We cannot simply say: oh, I have the Spirit of God already because I received Christ as my Lord and Savior. We have to look for manifestations of the Presence of the Holy Spirit, those gifts of the Spirit. That ability to praise the Lord with energy and joy and enthusiasm.

The Presence of the Holy Spirit in a person will always be accompanied by manifestations and signs, and energy. Where the Spirit of God is, there is energy, there is dynamism, there is joy, there is strength, there is victory, there are confrontations of power, it is a very dynamic life, and what the Bible calls the baptism of the Spirit is precisely that activation of what is inside us.

Let's remember for example that there is this story in the New Testament of when an angel moved the waters in the pool and the person who fell into the water first was healed. That idea of moving the waters, which is what I think the Bible means when it speaks of the baptism of the Holy Spirit with power. Unlike the Holy Spirit who is in us as mere potentiality, which is what seals us and makes us legitimate believers and followers of the Lord, and ensures our salvation; But what ensures a life full of power and effectiveness, and of dynamism in the Spirit is that visitation of the Holy Spirit with power, and the two things go together.

So Samuel is saying to Saul: when the Spirit falls on you you will know that it is within you because there are going to be signs, there are going to be manifestations. Samuel tells Saul that when he falls with the power of the Holy Spirit he will prophesy with them.

What did Samuel mean by this idea that Saul was going to prophesy? I imagine that prophesying not only meant what was going to happen in the future, but prophesying in this case means speaking in a powerful way, praising the Lord in a way directed by the Holy Spirit.

Do you know that when the Bible speaks of prophesying it is not only about what is going to happen in the future? Actually prophesying means: speaking under the power and anointing, and leading of the Holy Spirit. It can be through praise, it can be through singing, it can be through anointed preaching, it can be through a Word of comfort or exhortation, it can be through confrontation of something in the life of a person.

There are many ways to prophesy. And I believe that in this case I believe that when God tells Saul that he is going to prophesy he is telling him that he was going to worship the Lord in an effusive, supernatural and enthusiastic way.

When a person receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit not necessarily, I think, he has to speak in tongues, but I believe that he should give expression to that visitation of the Holy Spirit through adoration, praise, expressions of joy, affirmations of faith that you are receiving the Holy Spirit. It is that idea of how to put to use the energy of God that is descending on us. We will talk a little more about this later. God bless you.
