Author
Charles Spurgeon
Summary: The author believes in God and trusts in Him completely, even in the face of death. They recognize that living by faith is safer and happier than living by feelings or works. They cling to Jesus and receive everything from Him. Even the most righteous have to live this way, so the author, being a poor sinner, trusts in God entirely. They will stick to this to the end.
I am not to die. I must believe, and I do believe in the Lord my God, and this faith will keep me alive. I want to be counted among those who are just in their lives; but even if I were fully mature, I would not want to try to live by my righteousness: I would cling to the work of the Lord Jesus, and would still live by faith in Him and for nothing else. If I were able to deliver my body at the stake for my Lord Jesus, I would not trust my own courage and constancy, but would still live by faith.
"If I were a martyr at the stake
I would argue the name of my Savior;
I would beg forgiveness through His intercession,
And I would not claim any other rights. "
Living by faith is something safer and happier than living by feelings or works. The branch, living on the vine, lives a better life than if it were alone, even if it were possible that it lived completely separate from the stem. Living clinging to Jesus, and receiving everything from Him, is something sweet and sacred. Even the most righteous have to live this way, how much more am I to do it, who am a poor sinner! Lord, I believe. I have to trust You entirely. What else could it be? Trusting You is my life. I feel like it is. I will stick to this to the end.
