Summary: God's faithfulness is timeless and everlasting, even when we fail and doubt. He is trustworthy and his mercies are new every morning. We can rest in his faithfulness and trust in his promises, even when our faith falls short. The gospel is hope for both non-believers and believers, reminding us of God's covenant of grace and the faithful image of Jesus Christ.
When I think of God's faithfulness a lot of beautiful verses come to mind that summarize the faithful character of our Lord. But there is one that seems like a song from the Lord to the heart of the unfaithful man. The Word says: "The mountains will move and the hills will tremble, but my mercy will not depart from you nor the covenant of my peace will be broken." (Is 54:10). Yes, we are like the hills and mountains. God affirms us and encourages us at every step, but when the hour and the bad day come, we tremble, we break down and we forget his promise of faithfulness. Even showing indolence and ignoring his precious promises, he tells us that his help and provision will never be lacking. Nothing seems to portray the character of God and his relationship with his children so greatly as his faithfulness, which is timeless and everlasting. “Every morning its benefits are renewed; How great is his fidelity! " (Lm 3.23)
It is difficult to rest in the faithfulness of God if we live with our backs to the Word and neglect communion with our Lord. When our faith suffers the test of the falls in our daily walk, when we fail and wish to flee from the presence of God trying to hide sin behind fig leaves, his mercies and his fidelity show us that despite ingratitude and disloyalty, He remain faithful. "But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen them and protect them from the evil one" (2 Thes 3.3).
He is trustworthy, but the disappointment in our hearts is that we doubt that faithfulness and break down the walls of our faith. "If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, since he cannot deny himself" (2 Tim 2:13). God has patiently resisted through the centuries the relapses of faith of his children and has exalted those who have been faithful trusting in their faithfulness. I can't imagine Noah building an ark for dozens of years if he hadn't been confident in God's faithfulness.
I remember right now the parable of the prodigal son, the faithfulness of the loving father and his open arms to forgive human misery. The son confessed his sin, sincerely humbled himself, and the father gave him new clothes of forgiveness, restoring a past of pride, pride, and rebellion. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 Jn 1: 9).
The gospel is hope, first for those who do not know Christ, but it is also for the Christian. When Christ calls us to stand firm and live the faith, he is calling us to rest in his faithfulness, fearlessly, boldly, even when our faith does not always meet his expectations. He knows us, he knows of our spiritual lameness, but he takes pleasure in reminding us of his covenant of grace. But then, if some lacked faith, does their lack of faith nullify God's faithfulness? Stay alert; stand firm in the faith; be brave and strong ”. Ro 3.3 (NIV).
There is no greater proof of God's fidelity than having revealed to us his son Jesus Christ, the faithful image of the Father, the reason and foundation for proposing to grow every day in fidelity to him.
God bless you!
