Summary: The speaker, a civil engineer, has traveled extensively and has seen a lot of poverty. They were particularly struck by a young child and their donkey, who were collecting dirty water from a nearby puddle. The speaker wonders where God is in all of this suffering, and decides to become a Christian in order to love and help others. The poem ends with a call to love others as ourselves, as commanded by God.
In my life and in my work
As a civil engineer
I traveled a long way
That I got tired until ...
For all that I saw
There was not one good one among a thousand.
And in all that walking
I was very surprised
Because of the poverty that I saw.
I saw a little donkey walk
Loaded with ten "drums"
Coming down from the mountain
Followed by a child
Bare feet full of dust
Who I looked at with affection
And sadly at the same time.
And arrive with his burrito
Even a puddle of water
To fill those cans
With not very healthy water
With trash and smelly algae
To then go back up
About two miles I calculate
Until you get to your poor plots
Because the best lands
They are in the hands of other lords,
That they do not take off their gloves
Not even to sleep.
Of the poverty that I saw
With much astonishment I was left
And I also wondered
Grandpa where is God?
At the same time that I answered myself
God around here and it didn't happen.
All of this reminds me
The "Cantata of Santa María"
Oh Lord who would say it.
That no more is my experience
Of my step in this world
Of the much or little science
I saw in deep amazement
That everything was very bad
That it was good to regret
And become a Christian
Receiving our Lord
As our savior.
And so holding your hand
Let's love our brother
To give faithful fulfillment
What the commandment says:
You will love God above all things
Then you will love your neighbor as yourself.
What do you think about "What I saw"? We would love to hear from you.
