Summary: In Colossians 1:18, Paul assigns Jesus Christ the role of head of the Church. This means that Jesus is the one who directs and gives instructions to the Church, and the Church must look to Him for guidance. Just as the Holy Spirit guides us towards truth, Jesus is the one who directs the Church. We must always look towards Jesus and give Him glory, as He is the center of our meditations and the source of power in our lives. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we are energized and vitalized. Jesus Christ is not only the head of the Church, but also the head of our own lives.
The Apostle Paul is here assigning another essential role to Jesus Christ. Not only is Jesus Christ the very image of the Father, he is not only the Creator of everything that exists, not only is he the Sustainer of all creation but Jesus Christ is the head of the Church.
Here Paul is entering a language that is more spiritual and more human, and closer to ourselves and our identity as children of God and as members of the Church of Jesus Christ.
He is saying that the Father has assigned Jesus as the head, meaning that Jesus Christ is the one who directs the Church, Jesus Christ is the brain of the Church, Jesus Christ is the one who issues His directives and His instructions to the Church and that the Church must look to Him. to receive from Him all His directions, and His plans and His projects. He is the guide of the Church.
It is interesting that this also invites us to think about Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit having a very interesting relationship because you will remember that the Lord assigns the Holy Spirit in the Gospel according to John, especially in chapters 15 and 16, 14 where he speaks that God would send a comforter and that this comforter would guide us towards all truth, that comforter would be our instructor, he would be our animator, he would be the one who would give us instructions day by day on how to administer the things of the Church, He is the source of all revelation and all these things are filled by the Holy Spirit.
But here it is being suggested to us that as head of the Church Jesus Christ also plays that same role of directing, leading, channeling and giving His directions to the Church. So the Holy Spirit and Jesus have a very similar role in giving instructions and leading the daily processes and decisions, the programs, the missions, the initiatives, the administration of the Church here in history.
Jesus Christ is our head. We have to go to Him in every direction. The Lord said that if we abide in Him we will bear much fruit, that apart from Him we can do nothing, that just as He has an intimate indissoluble relationship with the Father and He is always looking towards the Father for his instructions, He says that He He does nothing without the Father first telling him what to do and that He only seeks the glory of the Father in the same way we have to relate to Jesus Christ.
Everything we do, everything we aspire to do, the initiatives we take in favor of the Kingdom of God, the messages we preach when we evangelize, when we are going to do anything in our life we have to go to the head like the body without The brain, without the mind, cannot do anything because the brain is what directs all the parts of the body and gives coherence to all the parts of the body. Likewise in Jesus Christ the Church finds its center.
That is why we have to always look towards Him, always give Him glory, point to Him, make Him the center of our meditations. Paul is said to be Christ-centered meaning that the Word Jesus was never far from the lips of the apostle Paul and he always gave glory to Him.
And we also have to cultivate that total dependence on Jesus and to the extent that we stay close to Him and give Him all the glory, we imitate Him, we pray to Him, we reflect His character, His qualities in that same measure. we will have power in our life and we will be effective. We should never start a single day without first entrusting our life to Jesus, thinking about Him, cultivating His image in our mind, giving Him glory and exalting Him because in that continually exalting Jesus and moving in Him, and living in Him there is a source of great power and of great vitality for the children of God.
Let's always look at Jesus. The Bible says that we have to fix our eyes, fixed our eyes on Jesus the author and consumer of our faith. That continually looking at Jesus and remembering who He is is tremendously powerful and energizes us, it is a tremendous source of vitality.
God bless us and let us never forget that Jesus Christ is the head of the body that is the Church and is the head of our own life as well, amen.
