Summary: This passage from Colossians highlights the creative character of Jesus Christ, who is described as the Creator of all things. This aligns with the Old Testament's description of God as the creator, leading to the conclusion that Jesus Christ is God himself. This idea is further supported by the Gospel of John, which describes Jesus as the Word who was with God and was God himself. This concept of the Trinity is a mysterious one, but it is central to the Christian faith. Jesus' creative role also means that he is above all things, and his name is above every name.
This wonderful passage from Colossians presents us with an incredible expression of the creative character of Jesus Christ. I think that to fully understand this passage we have to remember what Genesis says in chapter 1 verse 1, it says that: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
Notice that and here the apostle Paul is saying that: "In Him were all things created" and in other passages of Scripture he says that: "Jesus created and that in Him all things that exist subsist." So if in the Old Testament it says that God was the one who created all things and in the New Testament it says that Jesus created all things then it is telling us by inevitable logic that Jesus Christ is God Himself. It is one of the mysteries of the Scriptures, the fact that Christ is also assigned that creative role, the role of Creator of the Universe, of everything that exists.
We can better understand this passage if we go to the Gospel according to Saint John, a famous and well-known text that you will remember, I'm sure where it says that: "In the beginning" there we have an idea, right? that this same language that is being used in the Book of Genesis "In the beginning God created" right? Here it says: "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." In verse 2 it says: "This one" meaning Jesus Christ "was in the beginning with God."
It says here: "All things were made by Him" in other words John is saying when he says that by Him he is referring to Jesus Christ, he says: "all things were made by Jesus Christ" when we know that in the Old Testament it says that: " God created all things "so it says here that all things were made by Jesus Christ" and without Him nothing that was made was made. "
These are the types of passages that led theologians to conclude about The Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit because through Scripture we see how over and over again these three characters are one in reality because God is not many gods but only one God to conclude that The Trinity is a mysterious thing, a mysterious concept where God manifests himself through three incorporations, three expressions, but these three expressions are not each separate from each other but rather They are one because God is one and so the Scripture says.
So we see that when Paul is saying here this that: "In Him all things were created" he is saying that well, the creative role that only belongs to the Father is also the creative role that belongs to the Son and therefore they are one and the same thing. It is interesting that when John writes that in the beginning he was the Word referring to Jesus and that this Word was with God but that he was also God himself, he was with God but he was with God at the same time.
You see, there it is like that human language is being forced to express to the maximum something that is totally inexpressible, this mystery of the Trinity and of the deity of Christ who is man but who is also God, who is Son but is also Father to at the same time it is something that human language cannot understand but that we are called by faith to believe that it is so.
So I'm going to leave it for a moment but then we're going to continue exploring a little bit more about what the deity of Jesus is. Let it be clear then that Jesus Christ is Creator, Jesus Christ is the Creator of everything that exists and as He is the Creator of everything that exists He is above all things. That is why when we say that His Name is a name that is above every name we can understand, because by right, by identity, by state, certainly He is above everything, controls everything, has the power to determine everything and that is the Christ whom we serve.
God bless you and we will continue our meditation for the next few days, blessings.
