Summary: In John 11, some people doubted Jesus' power to heal Lazarus and prevent his death, despite knowing of His miracles. These doubters had a hardened heart and were not open to the power of the Holy Spirit. However, others who witnessed Jesus' miracle believed in Him and were open to His power. The difference between these two groups shows that the works of God can either bless or curse us, depending on our openness and faith. We should strive to be tender and teachable people, open to the Word and works of God.
The Lord has an understanding of things but people who are not totally initiated in divine reasoning see things in a more limited and poor way. And that happens with our lives too many times God He has a deep and eternal understanding of everything that we are going through but we have a limited perspective. And that is why we sometimes suffer more than necessary because we do not understand the glorious plans that God has in mind.
So it says here in verse 37: it says here are some of them who were looking at this scene, it says that some of them said, "Couldn't this one?" speaking of Jesus, and it is interesting he says: Couldn't this one ?. Do you notice a little bit of disparaging language there? Instead of saying the Lord couldn't. These people are unbelievers, these people don't necessarily believe in Jesus. These people are perhaps opposed to the Lord and are doubting His power. He says: "Couldn't this one who opened the eyes of the blind man?"
They knew about the miracle that the Lord had done in ancient times with a blind man, who knows if several blind men. It could have been Bartimaeus for example or the other blind man that the Lord healed by pouring saliva and mud into his eyes, the Lord healed several blind men. But they speak of a blind man who saw that he had been healed by the Lord. And he says: "Couldn't He who opened the eyes of the blind cause Lazarus not to die?"
I don't know, but I see here that there is an accusative tone full of doubt, as if he is intimating that: well if he were as powerful as He says he is or it would seem that he is, why didn't he prevent this man from dying? . Why did she allow it, why didn't she have enough power to heal him before he died?
What not?. When people do not believe, when people are not touched by the power of the Holy Spirit by more miracles they see, by more wonderful things they see, more signs of love, power, grace, the reality of God in their life as that they have a mist that covers their understanding and the great miracles are not enough to awaken their faith and lead them to believe.
That is why we cannot fix our gaze only on miracles, miracles are only a sign that points to the Son of God. If people don't want to believe they won't believe. The one who is stubborn, the one who has a heart hardened by more things that God does to wake them up if the door is closed God is not going to break it so they believe. And these stubborn people despite seeing the great miracles of Christ still say: oh look, this is proof that he is not the Son of God, he did not have enough power to heal this man and prevent him from dying.
Because one sees that several times in this passage, that either Thomas' disbelief, the relative disbelief or the imperfection of Martha's faith prevents him from seeing, the disciples cannot understand the language that Lazarus sleeps because they are not up to the task. of the power of God and of the faith that Jesus Christ has, and his complete understanding. And so we too in our relative unbelief many times cannot see the glory of God as God wants to manifest it. So that text is curious to me.
And another interesting thing is also that after at the end of all this to isolate only that element here, it says that when the Lord raises Lazarus some believe in the Lord. It says in verse 45: "Then many of the Jews who had come to accompany Mary and saw what Jesus did" raise Lazarus, "believed in Him. But how interesting in the next verse 46 it says, "But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done."
That one but tells me that there were two categories testifying to the miracle of Jesus. Some were those who had a tender heart and open to the Lord, and when they saw the miracle of Jesus they honestly believed because they had an open heart and the evidence that the Lord provides touches them and moves them to believe in the Lord. Others who have a hardened, stubborn heart, contrary to the Lord, that miracle instead of leading them to believe what it does is that it pushes them to go to the authorities, to denounce Jesus rather.
How did they report it? because one wonders what could they say against Him? Well they were saying: look there has been a tremendous miracle, if you do not hurry this man is going to stay with all the Jewish people so you have to do something. They were using this to accuse him. Interestingly, for some this miracle is a reason for life and for others that miracle is something that accelerates the death process of Jesus and their condemnation accelerates.
The Pharisees decide to kill Jesus, these people go and denounce him and become more in their unbelief. The miracle, the works of God, if we are honest, he blesses us, if we are stubborn, he curses us. For some the Word of God is life, for others the Word of God is condemnation because by not believing they are condemned. Wow.
I hope that you and I are among those who see the works of God for life not for death. When God speaks to you, do not be incredulous, when God tells you something, believe it and work on it, be tender. Ask the Lord to soften your heart, that we are always open to see what God wants to do in our life and that we be well, well penetrable by the works and the Word of God. God save us from being stubborn people because for stubborn people the Word of God becomes a stubborn thorn and causes death, and damnation. Whereas if we are tender the Word of God passes through us and leaves a sediment of life. I want to be in that category.
May the Lord bless you and we are going to invite the Holy Spirit to make us people of faith, teachable people, people tender for the Word and the works of God. Until next time, Pastor Roberto Miranda says goodbye to you, God bless him.
