Summary: Prayer is the act of presenting our needs to the Lord with confidence, just as Martha and Mary did when they informed Jesus about their sick brother. Our previous experiences with the Lord build a foundation of faith and relationship that allow us to appeal to Him in times of need. It's important to maintain a devotional life to continually build this foundation. The Lord invites us to a life of continuous prayer, and we should not be afraid to let Him know our needs. We should abandon ourselves to His wisdom and sovereignty, trusting that He has a plan for every situation in our lives.
I believe that "Lord come and help us, the one you love is sick" is a prototype of what prayer is. When we present our needs to the Lord, we confidently approach the Throne of Grace. The Word of God itself invites us to draw close to the Lord. It is a throne of grace, it is a throne of goodness and mercy, it is an opening throne for us. We do not have to come in fear that the Lord is going to reject us or that we are going to be bothering us in any way but rather that the Lord wants us to let him know our needs.
We are in the middle of this study concerning John chapter 11, death and resurrection of Lazarus. In the last program we were talking about the fact that Marta and MarÃa at the time of their crisis when their brother is terribly ill can appeal to the relationship that they already have with Jesus Christ, which John himself clarifies, that they were friends of Jesus, Mary was the one who had poured the perfume and had wiped the Lord with her hair, etc. not?.
We see here this idea that in the moment of crisis these sisters can appeal to the Lord based on their previous knowledge and experience with Him, an experience of adoration in the case of Mary, of service to the Lord in the case of Martha mostly and of hospitality to the Spirit of the Lord when they receive him in their home and his disciples. All of these things are important in our life when we serve the Lord, when we give Him our resources, when we have dialogue with Him through prayer, reading His Word.
All these things build in us a sediment of faith and relationship with the Holy Spirit, with Jesus Christ, which then allow us in times of need when we need wisdom, advice, strength, to appeal to that foundation that we have been building little by little. through life. That is why it is so important that we never neglect the Lord and our devotional life when we are in normal times because those are times to erect the platform that then allows us to appeal to the Lord in times of need and crisis.
It is interesting here that it says that when they see their brother in this state of crisis, of death, he almost says: "The sisters sent to say to the Lord: Lord, here is the one you love is sick." So for me, when I listen to those words of Martha and Mary that they send to Jesus, they send him to inform about the situation they are going through. Doesn't that look like prayer? What do we do when we appeal to the Lord Jesus Christ when we are in need?
We say to him: Lord I have this need, come and help me, come and help us. My son, my daughter is in a crisis situation, she is going through a difficult time in her life, please come and help us, and extend Your Hand to us. That is the prayer; letting the Father know our needs, small or big and appealing to Him in the name of Jesus and based on a posture of faith that comes through a continuous relationship with the Lord, and then the Lord does what He promises to do , be faithful, bless us, help us and help us, prayer.
The Word says that we must pray at all times. Pray without ceasing. Let the Lord know our needs. The apostle Paul says: do not be anxious about anything but let the Lord know your needs with thanksgiving and the Lord will keep your spirits in peace and do what He says He has to do essentially, right ?, Philippians chapter 4.
The Bible also says that we do not receive because we do not ask. In this case, Marta and MarÃa are in terrible need and instead of saying ah, you know what? We don't want to upset the Master, we don't want Him to feel like we are abusing our friendship with Him, no. They appeal to the Lord, they say Lord: help us, we have a need and You have the answer to that need.
How good it is to know that there is no situation in our life, no matter how small or how big it may be, that the Lord cannot help us. Jesus Christ and his Holy Spirit are never too busy. The Lord will never reject us when we are in need. We have to appeal to the Lord and then abandon ourselves to His Sovereignty, to His wonderful plan that He has in each case in our life and let Him attend to our need as He best knows He will.
Many times we appeal to the Lord and He has another plan, it is a complex, long-term plan as in this case that we are going to see here. Many times he responds immediately. But the important thing is that we let the Lord know our needs. We have to let Him know what we need Him to do and then we abandon ourselves to His wisdom, His Lordship, His Providence, His extreme plan that He has for every situation in our life.
I believe that "Lord come and help us, the one you love is sick" is a prototype of what prayer is. When we present our needs to the Lord, when we approach, the Word confidently speaks to the Throne of Grace. The Word of God itself invites us to draw close to the Lord. It is a throne of grace, it is a throne of goodness and mercy, it is an opening throne for us. We do not have to come in fear that the Lord is going to reject us or that we are going to be bothering us in some way but rather that the Lord wants us to let him know our needs.
Let us appeal to Him in times of crisis or need. The Lord invites us to a life of continuous prayer. Pray without ceasing, let us make our requests known to the Lord with all gratitude, with all boldness and daring many times even because He is willing to help us as in the case of Martha and Mary.
