Summary: The text "My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory" means that God's riches in nature, providence, and grace are beyond comprehension. His glory is even greater, and through Christ Jesus, we can receive all that we need. We must abide in Him and not rely on our own strength. The author wishes the reader a Happy New Year filled with the blessings of God.
Let us consider for a minute or two THE GREAT SOURCES from which this supply is to flow: "My God, then, will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory ." The preacher can sit down now, for he cannot conceive of this part of the text. God's riches in glory are beyond all thought.
Consider the riches of God in nature; Who could count its treasures? Visit the forests; Travel league after league amidst the trees that cast their broad shadow, not for the pleasure of some man but solely for God. Behold, on the lonely mountainside and on the vast plain, the myriad flowers whose perfume is only for God. How much wealth is created each spring and each summer in the limitless estates of the great King! Observe the vast quantity of animal and insect life that crowd the earth with the riches of divine wisdom, for "the earth is the Lord's and its fullness." Look in the direction of the sea; think of those schools of fish, so countless that, when only the periphery of them is touched by our fishermen, they find enough food to supply a nation.
Observe, also, the sunken treasures of the ocean, which no hand picks up except that of the Eternal. If you want to see the wealth of the Creator, turn your gaze to the stars; guess their number, if you can. Astronomy has broadened our vision, and has led us to see this world as a mere particle, compared to innumerable other worlds that God has made; and he has told us that, probably, all the myriad worlds that we can see with the telescope are a mere fraction of the countless stars that populate infinite space. Vast are the riches of God in nature. It takes a Milton to sing, as he sang in Paradise Lost, the riches of the creator God.
The riches of God in providence are equally limitless. He says to this creature: "Go," and it goes, and to another: "Do this," and He does it, for all things fulfill His command. Think of the wealth of God in grace. There nature and providence are eclipsed, for we have the source of eternal love, the gift of infinite sacrifice, the shedding of the blood of His own beloved Son, and the covenant of grace in which the smallest blessing is infinite. in value. The riches of His grace! "God is rich in mercy," rich in patience, love, power, goodness, rich beyond all conception.
Now your deficiencies will be supplied according to the riches of nature, and to the riches of providence, and to the riches of grace; But this is not all; the apostle chooses a higher style, and writes "according to his riches in glory." Ah, we have never seen God in glory! That would be a sight that our eyes could not contemplate at present. Christ in His glory, when transfigured on earth, was too bright a sight to be seen even by the sobering eyes of Peter, and James and John — darkness fell upon them, and they were like men sleeping. Do you angels know what God is in His glory? Does not His face veil even for you, so that, in the excessive radiance of His essence, even you will not be consumed? Who among all His creatures can determine the riches of His glory, when not even the heavens are clean in His eyes, and He notices foolishness in His angels?
"His riches in glory." It means, not only the riches of what he has done, but the riches of what he could do; for if He has made armies of worlds, He could make myriads of so many more worlds, and He would not have but begun. Who could calculate the possibilities of the omnipotent God? But the Lord will supply all that you need according to such glorious possibilities.
When a great king gives according to his riches, then he does not spare his gift of alms to the beggars, but gives like a king, according to the saying; and if it is a great feast day, and the king wears his royal robes, his largeness is on a noble scale. Now, when God is in His glory, think, if you can, what will be the largesse He distributes, what the treasures He brings out for His own loved ones! Now, "according to his riches in glory," He will supply all your needs. After that, do you dare to get depressed? Oh soul, what madness is unbelief! How blatant blasphemy it is to doubt the love of God! He is to bless us; and, if we are blessed by Him, we must be truly blessed. If He supplies our needs “according to His riches in glory,” they will be fully supplied.
Now let us conclude our meditation by considering THE GLORIOUS CHANNEL through which these needs are to be met: "According to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
You will see all the deficiencies of your soul satisfied, but you must turn to Christ for everything. "In Christ Jesus." That is the spring from which the living waters spring. You do not have to see your deficiencies supplied by your own care and eagerness. "Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow." You are to be enriched "in Christ Jesus." You are not to see your needs met by going to Moses, and working and working hard as if you were your own Savior, but through faith in Jesus Christ. Those who do not want to come to Christ have to do without grace, for God does not give anything to men by way of grace except through His Son. Those who come to Jesus more often will taste His abundance, for all blessings come through Him.
My advice, for myself and for you, is that we abide in Him; Well, because that is the way the blessing comes to us, we had better stay on it. We read about Ishmael who was sent into the desert with a waterskin, but Isaac dwelt by the well of the Living-One-who-sees-me, and it is wise that we dwell by the well of Christ Jesus, and never trust the waterskins of our own strength. If you separate yourself from Jesus Christ, brother, you separate yourself from the center of bliss.
I pray that you may dwell next to the well of this text throughout this year. Get out of the well. You're very thirsty? Draw water from the well, for it is overflowing; and when you argue this promise, the Lord will supply all you need. Do not cease to receive from God for a single minute. May your unbelief not hinder the bounty of the Lord, but rather hold fast to His promise, "My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." I don't know how to wish you a greater blessing. If you are enabled by the Holy Spirit to do this, you will enjoy what I sincerely desire for you, that is,
A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
