Summary: In Mark chapter 5, Jesus is on his way to Jairo's house when a woman who has been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years comes up behind him and touches his mantle. She had spent all her money on medical care that had been of no use to her. However, when she heard about Jesus, she had faith that she would be healed if she could just touch his mantle. Jesus turns to her and tells her that her faith has made her well. This woman exemplifies the need of the human being brought to the point of its maximum intensity which unleashes the powerful move of God. We should ask the Lord to bring our faith, love for Him, surrender to Him, and confidence in His ability to respond at that level of intensity and definition that will make Him awaken from His Throne and send His Grace upon our lives.
Chapter 5 of Mark presents one of my favorite characters in all of Scripture: the woman who touched the robe of Jesus, also known as the woman with the issue of blood, and who shows certain aspects of the ministry of Jesus that I believe we are interested in. it will be helpful to focus at this time.
You know the story; The Lord Jesus Christ is on his way, obeying the request made to him by Jairo, a prominent man in society whose daughter has been very ill. And on the way an anonymous woman without any apparent importance stands in his way, but who evokes a reaction on the part of Jesus that is very illuminating.
And let me start the passage, it says here that: "When the Lord was going to Jairus' house a large crowd followed him", I'm in verse 24 of Mark chapter 5, and the Word says that: "they pressed Jesus. But one A woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years and had suffered a lot from many doctors and spent everything she had, and nothing had taken advantage of, before she was worse, when she heard about Jesus she came from behind in the crowd and touched his mantle because She said: if I only touch her mantle I will be saved. And immediately the source of her blood dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed from that scourge. "
It is a memorable passage where I see that one of the things that we see here is the ministry of Jesus. It is a ministry of power and mercy as well. This woman appears on the pages of Scripture in a totally unexpected, almost incidental way. And there is a powerful contrast between her and Jairo, because in the first place it is a woman in a culture where women did not have much importance. Secondly, she is a poor woman, she says here that she has spent all her money, what little she had on medical care that had been of no use to her.
Jairo is a man, he is a principal of the synagogue. It is there where the Lord has his gaze focused, it is there that He goes, this woman is not on the agenda of Jesus Christ. But there is something that stands out about this woman, this woman has faith; She has heard of Jesus Christ and sets out in search of a healing touch from Him.
And I have always seen in this fact something very important for us of practical benefit, and that is that what makes us distinctive before the person of the Father is our ability to believe Him. God is always ready to respond to our faith initiatives. . The Lord does not know important or unimportant people, for him all his children are equally important. The Lord is never too busy to attend to the need of someone who approaches Him with a needy heart.
I think that what characterizes this woman is her intense sense of need. She is desperate, her illness is a painful, debilitating, shameful illness that isolates her from her community. A woman who had this type of disease was a woman who was considered impure in the religious society of her time. She is a woman who is in the last of her humanity, and she has nowhere to go and therefore she turns to the person of Jesus. It is his very need, his terrible condition that drives his faith to a point of despair.
And this is what gives her the strength to put aside all the obstacles that arise to intercede with the person of Jesus. And it is one of the things that we must remember. When we come before the Lord we must make sure that our faith, our trust in the Lord is so clear. And we even have to ask the Lord for faith to ask him properly.
Our indifferent, casual, incidental prayers will never have the same impact as an effective prayer. The Bible says that the effective prayer of the righteous can do much. And it is that intense prayer, that prayer that comes from the very roots of our being, that prayer that has nothing to lose, like Esther's prayer or statement when she says: if I perish, let me perish, because the situation of her people was so terribly desperate that there was no alternative but to go before the King.
And so we have to ask the Lord to help us in the moments of great despair in our life. Moreover, I would say that it is a privilege to find ourselves sometimes in desperate situations, because it is in that place where our cry reaches that level of the cry, of the cry to God that comes from the bowels of our being and many times it is the prayer that God likes to answer.
And this woman exemplifies that: the need of the human being brought to the point of its maximum intensity which unleashes the powerful move of God. Let us ask the Lord to bring our faith, our love for Him, our surrender to Him, our confidence in His ability to respond at that level of intensity and definition that will make Him so to speak awaken from His Throne and send His Grace upon our lives.
In the next few days we will be meditating with you and we will have a series of programs that I will continue this meditation immediately, but we will be distributing it through various presentations about what this woman who touched the mantle of Jesus. God bless you and please continue to tune in with us on upcoming shows.
