Edward McKendree Bounds (E. M. Bounds) was a pastor in the United States during the time of the American Civil War. He was born on August 15, 1835 and died on August 24, 1913. His life and ministry are distinguished by his insistence on prayer as the key to a powerful and effective spiritual life. for E.M. Bounds, prayer is one of the most important ministries of the Church, as well as of every believer. He was the author of eleven books, nine of which deal with the subject of prayer. His writings have inspired millions of believers across the earth to a more vital devotional life.
In the future, God Speaks Today will be including the writings of classic authors such as E. M. Bounds in the daily meditations, in order to edify our readers and familiarize them with the thought of great men and women of God. My dear friends, though life's fiery trials test us to our limits, remember our human weakness cannot endure them alone. Christ Himself entered the ultimate crucible, drinking the cup of divine wrath to shield us from destruction. Therefore, our present fires are for purification, not condemnation, and through vigilant prayer and trust in Him, our perfected faith and enduring life are secured by His victory.
Men and Women of Prayer
The Holy Spirit raises prayer to a vital and decisive position in the gospel of Christ. Christian leaders need to teach and lead their followers in prayer. Only leaders who pray can have followers who pray. We need men of overwhelming faith, spotless holiness, marked spiritual vigor, and consuming zeal who can ignite the church in fervor to God. The church has never marched without these men, and they adorn its history. The church that relies solely on its past history for its miracles of power and grace is a fallen church. We need chosen men who have turned to God with a perfect heart. Let us pray earnestly that God's promise to prayer will be fulfilled beyond what we imagine.
Perseverance in Prayer
The prayers recorded in the Bible may be short in words, but the godly men of God spent many hours in deep and intense prayer. Short devotions result in weak faith and a narrow character. It takes time for God to permeate our spirit, and short devotions break the channel of God's grace. Extensive prayer in the early hours of the day works to rekindle and invigorate a decayed spiritual life. Prayer is the most important occupation, and to dedicate ourselves to it, we must have calm, time, and purpose. Our age is not distinguished by prayer, and we need to relearn the value of prayer and make it a priority in our lives. The man who can bring preachers and the church back to prayer will be the greatest benefactor of our age.
The Secret of the Prayer Life - Being Alone with God for a Long Time
Spending a long time in prayer is essential for effective prayer. Short prayers are only effective if they are preceded by longer periods of prayer. The Bible saints and great Christian leaders spent long periods of time in prayer, shaping their character and influencing the world. Spending time with God consistently is crucial for knowing and influencing Him, and He blesses those who persist in their faith. The Scottish preacher Robert McCheyne had a specific prayer plan that involved dedicating certain times of the day to prayer. Other Christian leaders, such as John Welch and John Wesley, spent several hours a day in prayer.
The First Duty
Those who have done great work for God are those who have sought Him early in the morning. If we waste our mornings on other things, we will make little progress in seeking God for the rest of the day. The desire for God should be so strong that it breaks the chains of sleep, and only then can we truly have a deep relationship with Him. We need a generation of preachers who seek God early in the morning to receive His power and strength for the day ahead. Our laziness in seeking God is a sin that we need to overcome.
Be Specific When Asking
Faith and prayer must be specific and definite in their requests. We must ask for exactly what we want and expect to receive it. If we do this, God will fulfill our requests exactly as we presented them.
Faith Comes Directly from God
Faith is not just a belief or understanding, it is a divine energy implanted by God through His Word and the Holy Spirit. It is always aware of God and has Him as its goal. It is not believing in anything, but in God and His Word.
Doubt, an Obstacle to Receiving an Answer
Doubt and fear are enemies of faith and can take over our prayers, leading to anxiety and complaints. Peter failed to walk on water when he focused on the threatening waves instead of Jesus. Doubts should not be entertained, and we should focus on the power of God instead of our weaknesses. A simple but firm faith will dispel fear and doubt.
