As we fix our gaze on God, we will be in His light

SUMMARY: The author used a classroom activity about the planets to understand God's position in our lives. Like the Sun in the solar system, when we keep our gaze fixed on God, we will be in His light and experience day. But if we turn away from Him, darkness will come. The author learned to consult God even in small situations and trust in His mercy and grace. They thank God for His unchanging love and willingness to receive and cleanse them.

For many years I have taught Social Studies classes about the planets, their orbits, and their relationship to the Sun. Usually students role-play to understand these concepts. This year the Holy Spirit disturbed me, as I asked a student (the Sun) to stay in one place while another student (the Earth) moved around him to exemplify the translational movement of the planet. So the student who was rotating around the sun, had to make another movement around its axis to show the rotation of the earth.

When I explained that the rotation movement is what allows day and night, the Spirit reminded me of God's position. When we allow Him He is at the center of our life and if we keep our gaze fixed on Him, we will be in His light, it will be day. Although we do not see it because the storm clouds obscure the panorama, we will be in its light. In the same way that on cloudy days we do not see the sun but it is there in its place and it is daytime. Now, if we take our eyes off Him or turn our backs on Him, total darkness will definitely come into our lives.

There have been many occasions when I have made wrong decisions and after being in a bind because of that bad decision, then I have cried out to God to give me a way out. Thank God, He is merciful ("How precious, O God, is your mercy! That is why the children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings." Psalm 36: 7), His grace is infinite and delivers me of those situations. Therefore I have learned the lesson and consult God even in small situations, the wonderful thing is to feel the confirmation of the Holy Spirit or sometimes the discomfort of the Holy Spirit that urges me to change course.

Lord I thank you for teaching me that You do not change that even in my weaknesses and sins your arms are willing to receive me, cleanse me and above all love me. Allow me to continue learning to walk with you daily and recognize that even in times of difficulty you are still in the same place, attentive to my needs and ready to free me.
